Purchase tickets today to win a week’s stay in a condo in Fuseta, Portugal plus $2000 towards airfare.  Your email confirmation is your receipt.

Your Prize: Win a week’s stay for up to four people in a condo overlooking the sea in the old fisherman’s town of Fuseta on the Algarve Coast of Portugal. Plus, Second Helpings will provide $2,000 towards airfare and cleaning fees.  All other costs are the responsibility of the raffle winner.
Accommodation: The two-bedroom (master has a double bed and the guest bedroom has two single beds) condo makes the most of the panoramic views with wall to floor windows overlooking the sea. It has two baths, a small kitchen and dining area, access to a rooftop terrace, and access to a shared indoor pool. This penthouse condo overlooks the ocean and Ria Formosa Natural Park.
The Area: Fuseta is on the Algarve Coast, about 30 minutes from Tavira, known as one of the “most charming towns” in the Algarve region.  It is a “delightful mix of traditional Portuguese heritage with deep-rooted Moorish influences.”  There are cobbled streets, tiled houses, wonderful golf courses, and pristine beach.  From Fuseta, a train and short ferry ride will take you to Seville, Spain if you want to extend your trip.

Things to Do: Relax on the beach, watch fishermen bring in their catch, enjoy the wine (some consider it the national drink), or take a short boat ride to the Ria Formosa Natural Park, home to the largest seahorse population in the world. These are all on the must-do list. Add to that the bird-watching. Ornithologists come from all over the world to see the storks, purple herons, yellow-legged gulls, purple swamp hens, and many more to be found on the Algarve Coast.
Getting There: It is 4,000 miles from Savannah to Faro, Portugal. Most flights out of Savannah to Faro involve going to Lisbon, Vienna or Brussels and then on to Faro. Lufthansa, Air Canada, and other popular airlines fly to Faro. Expect about 17 hours to make the trip. Second Helpings is providing $2,000 towards airfare. From Faro, take a train to Fuseta, about 15 miles away.
Weather: If temperatures in the 60s or 70s appeal to you, the Algarve Coast will too! July is the hottest month on the Algarve Coast with an average temperature of 74 degrees. The coldest is January at 54 degrees. Expect lots of sunshine as the Algarve region gets 300 days of sunshine a year.

Prize Restrictions: Additional airfare costs, food, train fare, and all other costs are the responsibility of the raffle winner. The trip must be completed by October 30, 2020. Second Helpings staff and board of directors are not eligible to enter the raffle. Prizes have no monetary value and cannot be exchanged for cash. The prize is final. Accommodation is guaranteed based upon availability with the approval of the owners of the condo. Reviews of the condo and more information are available to https://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/content/rentals/fuzeta/1930596.

Beneficiary: Proceeds support Second Helpings’ efforts to rescue food and eliminate food waste while providing food for hunger relief agencies. Second Helpings picks up and delivers food in Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties at no costs to those we serve. Of the food distributed in our service area, 80 percent comes from Second Helpings. Over 3 million pounds of food was rescued in 2018. The food pantries received and distributed, on an average, over 50,000 pounds each.

SHARE THE BOUNTY annual event presents Founder Awards

The annual Share the Bounty fundraiser for Second Helpings on September 26 featured the presentation of the nonprofit’s major awards known as the Founders’ Awards. The Heritage Classic Foundation received the Supporter of the Year award and Food Lion stores earned Food Donor of the Year honors. The two awards were part of an evening that saw 200 area residents bidding on silent auction items donated by area businesses, golf courses, and more. Share the Bounty is the primary fundraiser for Second Helpings each fall. Jo Pender, vice president of the group, chaired the event for 2019. Awards were presented by Larry Landry, president of the board of directors for Second Helpings, and Lili Coleman, executive director.

The Heritage Classic Foundation was represented at the event by Steve Wilmot, president. The Heritage Classic Foundation nominated Second Helpings for the 2018 PGA Tour Charity of the Year. As a result, Second Helpings was awarded the honor from among more than 3,000 nonprofit agencies supported by the PGA. The recognition included a $30,000 award that was used to help purchase a new refrigerated truck. Second Helpings also receives contributions through The Heritage Classic Foundation’s Birdies for
Charity and Champions FORE Charity.

Food Donor of the Year was presented to local Food Lion stores, represented by A.J. Vargo, assistant store manager in Bluffton. Food Lion stores provided the largest volume of food donations to Second
Helpings this past year. In addition, Food Lion donated 500 thermal bags for the Fill the Need Program when it began in 2017. Through this effort, bags of food are packed each Thursday for riders of Palmetto Breeze Transit. Food Lion also is a grant supporter and was the first company to support food rescue in the country.

We thank the sponsors and supporters of this event.
