Yes, the picture above is correct. For every $100 we take in from donors, we provide over $2,000 worth of food to our fulfillment agencies. This makes us different from other charities which use some percentage of their income in the direct delivery of their services. We deliver with a multiplier, not a percentage.
We are able to multiply our donations because of our more than 350 volunteers and the helpfulness of our Food Network Partners. The majority of our donations (80% in 2018) go directly towards our food rescue operation.
Second Helpings is a unique nonprofit; we serve other nonprofits. We neither solicit nor accept money from our recipient agencies for our food and we do not receive any government funding. As a 501 (C) 3 organization, we rely on the generosity of the public (foundations, churches, civic groups, and individual donors) to fund our operations.
On a budget of around $400,000, we provide food that has a value of almost 5 million dollars.
Over 45,000 meal equivalents provided weekly.
People like Janelle, whose husband left her and her two small girls with no money and transportation. For the first time in her life, she had to ask for assistance at a local food pantry. Hear from Janelle:
“I would see the Second Helpings truck come in and I just knew that they were the reason we had strawberries, vegetables, yogurt and meat. I am so grateful for all they do in the community.”
We don’t want to let people like Janelle down!
South Carolina Angel Charity
We take our fiduciary responsibilities very seriously and strive to be good stewards of our donor’s generosity. The SC Secretary of State has designated us as an Angel Charity for using at least 80% of our money raised on our core mission. We owe it to all our stakeholders to manage our resources responsibly and maintain this status.
We need another Truck
There are food donors and agencies that we cannot fully service for lack of a truck to cover their area. We hope to raise $60,000 to purchase a new truck this year to help people we cannot reach today. Please consider donating to help our effort.
In an effort to be transparent about our operations and stewardship, we have posted our most recent tax return for the public to review.
